A practical guide to female travelers visiting Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo is a laid-back coastal town on the Caribbean side of the country that’s become a popular destination for solo female travelers, groups of friends, and even bachelorette parties.

When you think of Costa Rica, a lush tropical paradise with breathtaking beaches and lively nightlife probably comes to mind. But if you’re a girl looking for a fun and safe getaway, you might be wondering which spots in Costa Rica are best suited for you.

Puerto Viejo is a laid-back coastal town on the Caribbean side of the country that’s become a popular destination for solo female travelers, groups of friends, and even bachelorette parties.

Here’s everything you need to know about Puerto Viejo Costa Rica girls only.

Where to stay

One of the best things about Puerto Viejo is the variety of accommodations to choose from. Whether you’re on a budget or looking for a luxurious getaway, there’s something for everyone.

For a unique and eco-friendly stay, you can stay with us. We are a boutique hotel nestled in beautiful tropical gardens located in Playa Negra, within 5 minutes you will be swimming in the Caribbean Ocean. And we are located only 2 km from downtown Puerto Viejo.

Where to eat

Puerto Viejo has a diverse food scene that caters to all tastes and budgets. For a healthy and delicious breakfast, head to Bread and Chocolate, a cozy cafe that serves homemade pastries and organic coffee.

For lunch, visit our big-time favorite El Sol del Caribe, located in Playa Cocles, a local spot where Caribbean cuisine fused with Asian flavors resulting in mouth-watering meals.

As for dinner, don’t miss Koki Beach, an open-air restaurant with a romantic atmosphere and fresh seafood.

If you are looking for a nice place for cocktails we have two recommendations, Salsa Brava or Chaman, both of them are located beachfront and often have live music.

What to do

There’s no shortage of activities in Puerto Viejo, whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation. Some must-see spots include Jaguar Rescue Center, a wildlife sanctuary that rescues and rehabilitates animals, and Manzanillo Beach, a secluded and pristine beach with crystal-clear waters. For a unique experience, sign up for a chocolate-making workshop at Caribeans Chocolate and Coffee or schedule a private yoga class with us.

And if you’re feeling adventurous, book a surf lesson or rent a bike to explore the town and its surroundings.

Some safety considerations

While Puerto Viejo is generally a safe and welcoming destination, it’s important to take some precautions as a solo female traveler.

Avoid walking alone at night in deserted areas and always keep an eye on your belongings, as petty theft is common here. Don’t wear flashy jewelry or other valuables in public. If you’re renting a bicycle, be sure to lock it up whenever you’re not riding it.

The town itself is small and there isn’t much threat of violence, but avoid isolated, dark places at night. Be aware of your surroundings.

Make copies of your documents, including your passport and ID. Save those copies in your drive, cloud, or any other online platform where you can easily access them if needed

If you decide to stay with us we will be happy to provide you with contact info for our trusted drivers in town.

It is our ultimate goal that you feel safe at all times.
